The track was originally established in September of 1966 under the name of Penwell Raceway. Penwell Knights Raceway at Caprock Motorplex, as it’s known today, was formed in 2008, and with many renovations has become the premier state-of-the-art dragstrip in West Texas. During the 70’s and 80’s, the track was known to many as the most participated independent 1/4 mile drag strip in the United States. Many of the racers were approaching professional status, due to the monetary input from the boom in West Texas and their knowledge of race cars. Many legends, still heroes today, made passes down these lanes, including John Force (in the Coca-Cola funny car), Don Gartlis (the founder of the rear engine dragster), and Hayden Proffitt (who owned a rocket car than ran 4.35 seconds in the 1/4 mile at 326 mph).Top fuel dragsters today run mid 4’s under the right conditions. Motorcycle records were also broken — Otis Lance of Odessa, at the time, recorded the quickest speed on a cycle on one wheel (wheelie), which was recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records. Ed Erskine held the record for the fastest motorcycle in the early 90’s. Local bracket racers, Allen Bradshaw (Top Fuel), Chris McGaha (Pro Stock), and Blaine Hale (Pro Stock Motorcycle) turned NHRA pro-drivers after cutting their teeth at Penwell Knights Raceway. The famous PenDog (hot dog) was always available for dinner for the thousands of spectators at the track.
